Study Group on the Baltic States
Background and Aims
The BASEES Study Group on the Baltic States grew out of the UK Baltic Study Group, established in 2005. The group is an informal and interdisciplinary forum, which meets annually to foster greater discussion, collaborative research, interaction with policy practitioners and other non-academic partners and, potentially, joint activities in teaching. Membership of the group is open to UK academics and postgraduates from any discipline with an interest in the Baltic region who are conducting research relevant to the area.
Activities
Meetings rotate annually between institutions and consist of invited papers (maximum three) and discussion, followed by an annual meeting and a dinner. The first meeting was held at the University of Glasgow in 2005, the second at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies in 2006, the third at Nottingham Trent University in 2007 and last year’s meeting was hosted by the University of Aberdeen. The next meeting will be held on 11 May 2009 at the LSE. The speakers and their papers are listed below:
Kaarel Piirimae (University of Cambridge): 'The Baltic Question and the Big Three Allies in the 1940s: The Case of Estonia'
Tina Tamman (University of Glasgow): 'Unsung hero or honourable failure: Estonian envoy August Torma (1895-1971)'
Vytautas Petronis (University of Glasgow): 'The Ways to Perceive a Fatherland: Lithuanian Cartography and National Geographical Education before 1914'
The meeting will be followed by a trip to the British Library to examine the Baltic collection. For further information, contact Richard Mole.
